Successful Signing of the Cooperation Framework Agreement between the Asia Pacific International Arbitration Chamber and Chengdu University and the Inauguration Ceremony of the International Commercial Arbitration Research Institute

On June 20, 2024, the Asia Pacific International Arbitration Chamber (APIAC) and Chengdu University(CDU) held a grand ceremony in Chengdu for the signing of their cooperation framework agreement and the inauguration of the International Commercial Arbitration Research Institute. Attendees included Professor Zhang Xuemei, Director of the Social Sciences Department at Chengdu University, Professor Deng Shanxia, Dean of the Law School, Associate Professor Zang Xiao, Vice Dean of the Law School, Professor He Qiuzhu, Head of the Law School Department, Ma Zhanjun, President of the APIAC, Dr. Wu Yangyi, Director of the Research Center, along with several law school faculty members from the CDU and arbitration secretaries from the APIAC Southwest Service Center.

President Ma Zhanjun delivered a speech, emphasizing the APIAC's commitment to nurturing new talent in international commercial arbitration. He highlighted that guiding international commercial arbitration practice through academic research is a core mission and aspiration of APIAC. President Ma stated that the collaboration with Chengdu University would be comprehensive, spanning multiple fields and deep levels, including student internships and the implementation of academic achievements by faculty. APIAC remains dedicated to academic research and talent development in international commercial arbitration and will actively collaborate with universities in China, Singapore, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, and other countries to integrate academic theory with practical application. Using the International Commercial Arbitration Research Institute as a base, APIAC aims to enhance academic research in international commercial arbitration, produce influential academic results, and establish the "International Commercial Arbitration Research Institute" as a distinctive academic brand for both the APIAC and CDU.

Professor Zhang Xuemei remarked in her speech that the signing of the cooperation framework agreement and the inauguration of the International Commercial Arbitration Research Institute represent an opportunity for deeper integration of inter-university resources and promotion of regional legal co-construction. She expressed hope for further alignment of resources and academic talents, storytelling of international commercial arbitration from a Chengdu perspective, fostering close collaboration between industry, academia, and research, and advancing the development of both theoretical and practical aspects of international commercial arbitration. The collaboration aims to enhance the academic value and theoretical framework of international commercial arbitration, build an international, high-level research team, and innovate in the cultivation of distinctive, service-oriented, professional, and innovative legal talents.

The proposed "International Commercial Arbitration Research Institute" will have President Ma Zhanjun as the Honorary Dean, Professor Zhao Wanyi, a specially-appointed professor at the CDU Law School, as the Chief Expert, and Professor Deng Shanxia as the Executive Dean. President Ma Zhanjun and Dean Deng Shanxia formally signed the "Cooperation Framework Agreement between the APIAC and CDU" and unveiled the "International Commercial Arbitration Research Institute."

Following the ceremonies, a symposium was held between the APIAC and CDU to discuss student internships, the implementation of academic achievements by faculty, and the establishment of research teams. Both parties expressed their intention to form working groups to coordinate and implement specific cooperation details, ensuring the sustained and efficient advancement of their collaborative efforts.

The successful conclusion of this ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter in the cooperative relationship between the two institutions, laying a solid foundation for academic research and talent development in international commercial arbitration.
