Asia Pacific International Arbitration Chamber (Malaysia)Attend the 17th World Chinese Entrepreneurs (“17th WCEC”) 2024

The 17th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention was held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in Malaysia from September 9 to 11, 2024. The Asia Pacific International Arbitration Chamber (Malaysia) (“APIAC (Malaysia)”) was among the distinguished participants, joining over 4,000 global business leaders in this grand event. With the theme "Reimagineering the Future", the convention focused on contemporary topics such as geopolitical economy, artificial intelligence, trade and investment, cooperative innovation, and inclusive development.

The 17th WCEC featured Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Minister of Transport Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Finance Minister II Dato Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Dato Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Lih Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Dato Seri Tiong King Sing, Selangor Menteri Besar Dato Seri Amirudin Shari, Vice President of China Overseas Friendship Association Chen Xiaojiang, and chairman of The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong Dr Jonathan Choi Koon-Shum and other prominent political and business leaders.

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China, this is a historical milestone which lends special significance to the 17th WCEC. Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his keynote speech highlighted that Malaysia and China have enjoyed a long-standing bilateral relationship, underpinned by robust trade and investment ties. In 2023, China retained its position as Malaysia's largest trading partner for the 15th consecutive year, with bilateral trade totaling $98.8 billion (approximately 430.3 billion Malaysian Ringgit). Meanwhile, the diligence and wisdom of Chinese entrepreneurs have earned global acclaim. Furthermore, the role of Chinese entrepreneurs in Malaysia and globally for assuming the task of propelling the local and international economy has been widely recognized and saluted. The WCEC provides a valuable platform for many prominent Chinese business leaders to come together, offering a forum to enhance economic cooperation, promote mutual understanding, and foster in-depth exchange and interaction across various industries.

During the discussion session of the special forums, the participants engaged in comprehensive exchanges and explorations on core topics in commercial and financial sectors, including the legal risks of cross-border trade. Representatives from APIAC (Malaysia) actively participated in the said discussion regarding the market scale and coverage of Buy Now Pay Later mechanism across ASEAN countries. Dato Seri Aswin Techajareonvikul, CEO and President of BJC Big C Group, also emphasized that arbitration remains the preferred choice for resolving cross-border disputes.

During the 17th WCEC , representatives from APIAC (Malaysia) had fruitful conversations with participants from various sectors, including artificial intelligence, mechanical and electronic engineering, financial technology, and international power and renewable energy. They gained insights into the business landscape and better understanding of the operations of companies in Malaysia.

Furthermore, our representatives discussed the risk of cross border disputes faced by enterprises who were in the course of going global with a range of business leaders, and also introduced the framework of international arbitration and development model of  APIAC (Malaysia), especially the advantages in providing alternative dispute resolution service by the arbitration institutions in Malaysia.
