On March 3, 2024, the training seminar on "Theory and Practice of International Commercial Arbitration," hosted by the Asia Pacific International Arbitration Chamber, was successfully held in Chongqing. This event garnered widespread attention and attracted participants from various sectors. The purpose of this training seminar was to enhance participants' theoretical and practical knowledge of international commercial arbitration and mediation, cultivate emerging talents in the field of international commercial arbitration and mediation in the Asia-Pacific region, and address the challenges posed by the growing transnational commercial activities. This initiative aims to promote the development of international commercial arbitration and mediation mechanisms and improve the efficiency and professionalism of commercial dispute resolution in the region.

The seminar featured presentations by Professor Ma Zhanjun from China, Professor Tu Guangjian from Macau, Professor Steve Ngo from Singapore, and Lawyer Zhang Shengfan from Malaysia. Additionally, Professor Zuo Weimin, Dean of the Law School of Sichuan University, and Professor Zhao Wanyi from Southwest University of Political Science and Law were invited as special guests. Over 80 participants, interested in international arbitration, including university professors, arbitrators, and lawyers engaged in international business, attended the training.

During the seminar, Lawyer Zhang Shengfan delivered a presentation on " Cross-border Investment and International Business Affairs Protection ", focusing on issues encountered in cross-border investment practices under the context of the “Belt and Road” Initiative. He specifically discussed legal compliance, protection of international business affairs, alternative dispute resolution, Malaysian arbitration, Singaporean arbitration, and the Singapore Convention on Mediation. He elaborated on the specific challenges encountered in the practice of cross-border investment, with a particular emphasis on providing a comprehensive and systematic overview of arbitration and mediation in Malaysia and Singapore.

Professor Tu Guangjian's presentation, titled " Parallel Proceedings between International Commercial Litigation and Arbitration: A Model for A Global Solution", discussed conflicts between global arbitration and litigation, using cases from Hong Kong arbitration to highlight issues such as the validity of arbitration agreements and the allocation of rights in confirming the validity of arbitration agreements.

As a special guest, Professor Zuo Weimin delivered a speech on "How Arbitration Responds to the Impact of Information Technology Waves". The discussion focused on how to enhance the role of arbitration in dispute resolution through information technology. It was emphasized that the evolution of arbitration mechanisms should adapt to the changes of the times and promote the informatization of international arbitration. Professor Zuo provided a detailed analysis of the early stages and current status of "online arbitration" development and offered prospects for the potential application of artificial intelligence in arbitration in the future, bringing new insights and inspirations to the participants.

Professor Steve Ngo's presentation on " Key Development and Hot Topics in International Arbitration " covered various issues related to arbitration and mediation, including the location of international arbitration, further development of trade law committees, cost reduction in arbitration, scrutiny of the arbitration industry, and technology and artificial intelligence. He particularly emphasized Singapore's position in international arbitration, Singapore's arbitration law, Singapore's arbitration institutions, and the relationship between arbitration and mediation.

Professor Ma Zhanjun's presentation on " Challenges and Opportunities for Chinese Lawyers in International Arbitration Business " analyzed the barriers encountered by Chinese lawyers in developing international arbitration businesses and proposed insightful solutions to address these issues. Professor Ma believes that the establishment of the Asia Pacific International Arbitration Chamber in the southwestern region of China will promote the development of international commercial arbitration in the region and facilitate the resolution of issues related to arbitration language and applicable laws for international arbitration business lawyers.

As a special guest, Professor Zhao Wanyi delivered a speech on "Arbitration Issues in the Context of Company Law," highlighting the close relationship between company law and arbitration. With the revision of company law, arbitration plays an increasingly important role in resolving commercial disputes. Professor Zhao believes that the transformation of company law provides a broader stage for arbitration while also posing new challenges to arbitration rules and procedures.

The training seminar concluded successfully. This training seminar is the first international commercial arbitration training held by the Asia Pacific International Arbitration Chamber after the establishment of its southwestern service center in Chongqing. With the official establishment of the Asia Pacific International Arbitration Chamber in the southwestern region, arbitration services will prosper in the region, starting in a new era of international arbitration and taking new energy into the soft connectivity of international economic and trade rules.
